Fraser was raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta, child of a 12th-generation French-Canadian settler parent and a post-war Dutch immigrant parent. He received his B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Alberta in 1998. He received his Ph.D. in supramolecular chemistry from The Scripps Research Institute while working with Julius Rebek, Jr. He studied medicinal chemistry as a post-doctoral fellow with François Diederich at ETH-Zurich, and has been a professor at the University of Victoria since 2005.

Fraser has an unhealthy obsession with the subtleties of molecular recognition in water. He is passionate about creating chemical tools that drive biology and medicine in new directions. He also loves to open doors for students to explore new walks of life and expand into new areas of science. Fraser takes his greatest pleasures from family, students, writing, strong coffee, and soccer.

Alana obtained an honours degree in microbiology at the University of Victoria. She completed her undergraduate thesis in the dark science of x-ray crystallography where she developed a love for protein engineering. In her free time, Alana teaches yoga to seniors and volunteers with a non-profit society which provides fitness support to people with physical disabilities. These experiences solidified her respect and passion for scientific research and public health; she hopes to apply the skills she learns in her master’s degree towards her career vision of becoming a physician-scientist.

Andrew was born and raised in Victoria where he graduated in chemistry. He is interested in all things biochemistry and one day hopes to attend medical school to become a doctor. His current project is based around peptide synthesis, while analyzing costs of performing Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis. His many hobbies include baseball, weight lifting, mountain biking, hiking, and climbing.

Finn (he/him) is an undergraduate student at the University of Victoria in the Chemistry for Medical Sciences program. His academic interests center on synthetic and analytical chemistry, with a particular focus on supramolecular sensing. Outside the lab, Finn can often be found bouldering, surfing, or unwinding with a good medical drama. He maintains a deep love of cheese; a commitment made all the more impressive by his lactose intolerance.

Raul was born in Mexico and completed his bachelor’s degree there. Now in Canada, he is completing a diploma at Camosun College and hopes to start a master’s degree in Chemistry soon. He is currently assisting with peptide synthesis and is eager to learn as much as possible from everyone. In his free time, he loves video games and playing bass guitar.

Ruby has grown up in Victoria and is currently an undergraduate student at the University of Victoria in the Biochemistry program. She is interested in synthetic chemistry and is excited to gain research experience with the Hof group. During her free time, Ruby enjoys hiking around Vancouver Island with friends and baking.

Cleopatra is a chemistry graduate from Victoria BC and hopes one day she’ll have a compound named after her. Her interests lie in synthetic chemistry, her project is on supramolecular structures, and she’s happy to brag that she’s probably the only chemist who hasn’t seen Breaking Bad. In her free time Cleopatra ranges between wild west coaster, hiking, bouldering, and hugging trees, to becoming an eighty-year-old grandma who enjoys baking for her neighbours and sewing quilts and clothes for friends.

Makenna grew up in Delta, BC and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry from the University of Victoria. Her project focuses on synthesizing drug reversal agents for anesthetic drugs and measuring their kinetics through fluorescence. Makenna is very excited to not be studying the structural biology of proteins anymore. During her free time, she likes to paint, play volleyball, and make jewellery.

Anthony is a Biochemistry and Chemistry student who wants to apply his learning to the opiate crisis and the war on cancer. Previously, he worked with polymeric amphiphiles making functionalized gold nanoparticles for cancer photothermal therapy. Next, he will expand his synthetic skills in the Hof group making supramolecular hosts for drug sensing and reversal agents. In his spare time he likes to cook, play board games, read, and go to the gym.
