Hof Lab Team

Fraser was raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta, child of a 12th-generation French-Canadian settler parent and a post-war Dutch immigrant parent. He received his B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Alberta in 1998. He received his Ph.D. in supramolecular chemistry from The Scripps Research Institute while working with Julius Rebek, Jr. He studied medicinal chemistry as a post-doctoral fellow with François Diederich at ETH-Zurich, and has been a professor at the University of Victoria since 2005.

Fraser has an unhealthy obsession with the subtleties of molecular recognition in water. He is passionate about creating chemical tools that drive biology and medicine in new directions. He also loves to open doors for students to explore new walks of life and expand into new areas of science. Fraser takes his greatest pleasures from family, students, writing, strong coffee, and soccer.

Alana obtained an honours degree in microbiology at the University of Victoria. She completed her undergraduate thesis in the dark science of x-ray crystallography where she developed a love for protein engineering. In her free time, Alana teaches yoga to seniors and volunteers with a non-profit society which provides fitness support to people with physical disabilities. These experiences solidified her respect and passion for scientific research and public health; she hopes to apply the skills she learns in her master’s degree towards her career vision of becoming a physician-scientist.

Juan Diaz is from Colombia where he obtained his degree in chemistry from the University of the Andes. Born and raised in Bogota, he found an interest for drug discovery during his studies and has now come to UVic to work on the synthesis and screening of guest-sensing molecules for his Master´s. Proper of a chemist who likes to mix things, he has an interest for cocktail-making and is a certified bartender. He also built his own gaming PC, that should tell you how much he likes video games.

Anton is from Kyiv, Ukraine, where he completed a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at the Chemical Faculty of the Institute of High Technologies of Schevchenko National University, Kyiv. He first visited our lab in 2019 as a part of Mitacs Globalink Research Internship and after finishing his studies in Ukraine decided to join us again in pursuit of an M.Sc. at UVic. Has a great interest in organic and supramolecular chemistry, and is also interested in quantum chemistry, physics and mathematics. Anton enjoys playing computer games and watching art-house movies.

Allison grew up in Ontario and recieved her Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry at Queen’s University. She is interested in biological applications of supramolecular hosts. In her free time, she enjoys taking her dog on hikes and dreaming of a blissful reclusive existence.

Kirsty completed her B.Sc. in chemistry, minoring in psychology. Originally intending to study biopsychology, a love for organic chemistry prompted a change in direction and she has not looked back since. Kirsty is interested in organic synthesis and its applications to biomedical problems. She is from Nanaimo and an island girl at heart who loves spending time outdoors, gardening, and hanging out with family and friends.

Zoey was born in the Netherlands and obtained her B.Sc. in Chemistry at the University of Applied Science in Leiden. She arrived in the Hof lab in September 2015 as an intern to finish up her bachelor’s with a research project, and decided to return for grad school. Her research is focused on finding a host for small molecules that play a role in diseases. In her free time she likes to bake and swing dance.

Chelsea is currently completing her Ph.D. in Chemistry in the Hof group… yay. Her academic passion is for organic synthesis and supramolecular systems. She loves animals, has a bunny with behavioural problems, and will have a pet goat at some point in her life.
